Sand City

There’s always been an attraction to sand, dunes especially.  Due in part to Ed Weston’s iconic shots, the interest in capturing these raw phenomena starting growing on me.  Katherine and I went searching a few times for the fabled dunes in Oceano, CA, but came up empty.  There were some in Cape Cod, sort of near where we both grew up, but those didn’t feel the same.

Driving South along the coast into Big Sur from route one, you’ll pass a nice little area just North of Monterey called Seaside, and directly above that, Sand City.  I think the name comes from the swathes of sand that come nearly to edge of the road.  Unhampered  by the “no trespassing” signs of a construction project, I walked around a bit and saw what I could as the sun floated low…
